Trump, Xi Signal Trade Truce: Breakthrough Talks Ease US-China Tensions
US President Donald Trump announced a major breakthrough in trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping after what he called “very productive” discussions in South Korea.
President Trump revealed that the United States would lower tariffs on Chinese imports and hinted that a comprehensive trade deal could be signed soon, marking a potential turning point in months of renewed economic friction between the two powers.
A key highlight of the talks was China’s agreement to provide the U.S. greater access to its rare earth minerals—critical components used in electronics, electric vehicles, and defense technologies.
The president described this move as ending the “rare earths roadblock,” saying it would help strengthen American industries and reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers.
China’s response was more restrained, emphasizing that both sides had reached a “consensus to resolve major trade issues” and calling the talks “constructive and forward-looking.” While no progress was announced on the unresolved TikTok negotiations.
Analysts say both Trump and Xi aimed to project stability and cooperation, with Xi negotiating from a position of economic confidence and global influence.
