Nigerian government to receive another set of artefact from London

London’s Horniman Museum has announced that it would return 72 artefacts, including 12 brass Benin bronzes to the Nigerian government.

This follows a request by the national commission for museums and monuments in January.

The Benin bronzes which are among Africa’s most culturally significant artefacts were looted from Benin City by British soldiers in 1897 and ended up in museums in Europe and the United States.

Chair of the trustees of the Horniman Museum and gardens, Eve Salomon who said the objects were acquired through force noted that it is both moral and appropriate to return their ownership to Nigeria

Recall that German authorities last month returned the first of more than 1,100 priceless sculptures to Nigeria.
