US seeks fairness in addressing grievance of EndSARS protesters

President Muhammadu Buhari says the federal government will allow the system to exhaust itself, by waiting for pronouncements from state governments that set up panels to probe police brutality in the country.

The president spoke when he received Mr Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state at state house, Abuja.

Buhari said many state governments are involved, and have given different terms of reference to the probe panels, so federal government can’t impose ideas on them.

On the recent removal of Nigeria from the watchlist of countries violating religious freedom, Buhari said no one is discriminated against on the basis of his or her faith.

In his reaction, United States secretary of state, Anthony Blinken, urged the Nigerian government to ensure accountability in addressing the grievances of victims of the police brutality and the EndSARS protests.

He described the report of the EndSARS probe panel as democracy in action hoping that necessary reforms would be made.

Blinken appreciated the contributions of president Buhari to the protection of the climate.
