Malawi election: President Mutharika on track to retake seat

Malawi’s president, Peter Mutharika has so far taken 40.44 percent of votes cast in the may 21 presidential election with 75 percent of the votes counted.

Mr. Mutharika came to power in 2014 as his government has been criticized with corruption allegations.

Political analysts posited that his re-election could still face a tough battle even with him leading the contest.

Head of the opposition’s Malawi Congress Party, Lazarus Chakwera has 35.34 percent while deputy president Saulos Chilima secured 18.35 percent.

Parliamentary elections were also held alongside the presidential poll on Tuesday.
