LASTMA Warns Lagos Residents Against Consuming Spilled Groundnut Oil
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has warned residents, traders and food vendors against consuming or selling groundnut oil recovered from a tanker that overturned at Ojota Bridge in Lagos.
It was reported that the 33,000-litre tanker on Wednesday around Abiola Garden, inward Old Toll Gate overturned, causing traffic congestion and obstructing the road.
LASTMA said preliminary reports suggested that brake failure might have caused the accident and no casualties were recorded.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over reports that some people were scooping the spilled oil from the road and drainage channels. He warned that the oil might have been contaminated by dirt, road debris and other harmful substances, making it unsafe for consumption.
LASTMA deployed a rescue team and two tow vehicles to remove the tanker and ease traffic congestion, with support from the police, Federal Road Safety Corps and other emergency agencies.
Meanwhile, the authority urged the public to avoid the recovered oil to prevent potential health risks.
