Nigerians urged to stay hydrated, maintain hygiene amid El Niño heat concerns

Nigerians have been advised to stay hydrated and maintain good personal hygiene as the country prepares for possible extreme heat conditions associated with the El Niño climate pattern.

A medical doctor, Peter Obiora, gave the advice while featuring on Adaba FM’s morning show, Issues in the Polity, where he explained that El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon linked to the unusual warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean, which can influence weather patterns across different parts of the world.

Dr Obiora identified dehydration, skin diseases and an increased risk of cholera among the possible health consequences of extreme heat and changing weather conditions.

The medical doctor urged Nigerians to drink plenty of water, practise good hygiene and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours, particularly between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. He also advised the public to wear light clothing, seek shade and pay special attention to children, elderly people and individuals with existing health conditions.

He stressed that anyone experiencing dizziness, weakness or confusion during extreme heat should seek immediate assistance, while suspected cases of heat stroke require urgent medical attention.
