Strike: Public Schools Shut In Ondo

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and its affiliates, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), began a nationwide strike on Tuesday in defiance of a restraining court order barring them from embarking on the industrial action.

The strike, according to labour leaders, became necessary because of the ill treatment melted on workers in the country.

Activities in some government-owned institutions were grounded as members of the Ondo state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress joined their colleagues in the country to observe the nationwide strike.

It was observed that most schools in Àkúrẹ́, the state capital, opened with no academic activities as students were seen roaming around.

Ondo state chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Clement Festus, revealed that the Ondo state chapter of the union only acted upon the order of the national body.

On his part, Mr. Michael Bakare retreated, saying that the strike is necessary considering what has been going on in the country in the past few months.

Mr. Olalekan Fabayo and Mr. Akinpelu Amao, in their same view, berated the labor union’s move at a time like this, saying it’s politically driven.

Mr. Amao called on the national industrial court to act on the case of court order defiling by the union bodies.
