UN says Afghanistan likely to face severe starvation in winter

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says millions of Afghans will face starvation this winter unless urgent action is taken.

The executive director of the WFP, David Beasley, added that more than half of the population faces acute food insecurity, while several children under five years could suffer acute malnutrition.

The Taliban takeover has weakened an already fragile economy that was heavily dependent on foreign aid.

Western Powers has suspended aid, the World Bank and international monetary fund also halted payments.
