EndSARS memorial witnesses large turn out of youth
In October 2020, spontaneous protests erupted in different parts of the country against police brutality, especially by the personnel of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad, and the #EndSARS movement soon garnered international support.
The protests, however, turned bloody on October 20, 2020, at the lekki toll gate in Lagos where protesters were shot at with military men taking over the toll gate.
One year later, youths in some part of the country defiled state government and police warnings to gather and honour those that lost their lives during the protest.
Youths in Lagos, Abuja, Osun and Akure, the Ondo state capital trooped out in numbers to commemorate the one year anniversary of the nation wide ENDSARS protest.
In Akure, they marched From old garage to the police headquarters where they met with the commissioner of police, Salami Aminu Who received their letter of request and promised to relay the message to concerned stakeholders.
The command’s public relations officer Funmilayo Odunlami in a telephone interview with Adaba FM commended the youths for being organised and reasonable.
One of the youths Olúwaṣeun Ogunmola, said the anniversary is an opportunity for the youths to air their grievances and to attack the police or any government structure.
A drive through Akure metropolis confirmed that the youths dispersed after the consultation at the police headquarters as no mushroom gathering was registered or reported anywhere in the state capital.
