Nigerian clubs prepare for CAF competitions

Nigeria Professional Football League Champions Akwa United, Rivers United and Bayelsa United will be in action this weekend in the first leg, preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Of the three teams involved in the CAF inter-club competitions, only Akwa United will be playing at home when they welcome Algeria’s Cr Belouizdad to the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo on Sunday.

The Uyo-based team will be boosted with the complement of 10,000 spectators that would be allowed into the stadium for the game.

Rivers United will be hoping to get a favourable result when they visit Tanzania’s young Africans sports club in their Champions League first leg preliminary round on Sunday.

The pride of Rivers, who finished second on the Nigeria professional football league log, will have a hill to climb when they tackle the Tanzanians, who finished second in their domestic league, behind Simba FC.

Bayelsa united return to the continent for the first time since 2014, but controversy trails their opening game against Ashanti GB after the coup that took place in guinea last Sunday, which may hamper their opening game.

Bayelsa goalkeeper John Shaibu says they are still preparing despite the current situation.
