Ekiti police begin investigation as fumigation chemical lands over 100 students in hospital
The Ekiti state Government has distanced itself from the fumigation exercise that resulted into crisis that erupted at the college of health technology, Ijero-Ekiti.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Iyabo Fakunle who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone interview said the fumigation exercise was Carried out by the agent of the Federal fire services.
On his part, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, says majority of the over 100 students who were hospitalised as a result of the fumigation at the College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti have been discharged.
Filani in a telephone interview said that 36 were still hospitalised at the State specialist hospital, Ijero, 2 referred to Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti while one was taken to a private hospital in Ado-Ekiti for further attention.
Dr Filani said that additional medical personnel, oxygen cylinders and fluids had been mobilized to Ijero-Ekiti to support those attending to the affected students.
He assured the Public that the situation was under control.
The Commissioner said that the Federal Fire Service personnel, who carried out the exercise had been handed over to the police for questioning.
Meanwhile, the commandant of the Federal Fire services in the state, Olajide Philip when contacted on telephone interview said the chemical used to fumigate the school was friendly and not harmful to humans.
He added that his agency has carried such activities in some other public places in the state without being injurious to human health.
