Saudi Arabia stun Argentina 2-1 in Group C opener

Saudi Arabia caused one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Fifa World Cup as they beat powerhouse Argentina 2-1 in the opening match of Group C in Doha’s Lusail Stadium Tuesday.

The Albiceleste went ahead in the 10th minute through a Lionel Messi penalty, and largely controlled the opening half against the Saudis.

Messi, playing his fifth and likely last World Cup finals at 35, also beat goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais on a breakaway but that goal and two others by teammate Lautaro Martinez were ruled offside.

Herve Renard’s Saudi Arabia however, came out roaring after resumption as Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari both scored in brilliant fashion in the 48th and 53rd minute respectively to give them the lead, which they bravely held onto till the final whistle.

Group D will see its first action in the WC when the Danes face the Tunisians today
