Spain sets May as target to wind down COVID-19 stay-at-home order

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says his government plans to start winding down the country’s lockdown measures in the second half of May.

These restrictions will be eased slowly and gradually to ensure safety, he said at a parliamentary session.

Mr Sanchez is also expected to extend Spain’s state of emergency until 9 May.

Spain first enforced its lockdown on 14 March.

It has the second highest number of virus cases in the world at 204,178.
