COVID-19: Fayemi orders release of 30 inmates

The governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi has ordered the release of 30 prisoners in the Ado-Ekiti correctional center.

The state attorney general and commissioner for justice, Olawale Fapohunda told Adaba Fm in the state that the move was part of the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Fapohunda maintained that the Ekiti state advisory council on prerogative of mercy met on Wednesday, April the 15th, to consider applications for clemency from 45 prisoners in the correctional center.

He noted that the council considered the applications on merit and recommended 30 inmates who fell within the category of inmates convicted for minor, low risk offenses particularly those who have 18 months or less remaining of their sentence to serve.

The attorney general stressed that the governor has also directed that the released individuals should immediately be listed as vulnerable persons on the database of beneficiaries of the Ekiti state COVID-19 palliative programme.
