Russia detains more Jehovah’s Witnesses amid crackdown

The Russian Security Service has detained several Jehovah witness members in the central region of Mordovia.

Russian authorities consider the movement a totalitarian sect and in 2017 Moscow designated it an extremist organisation and ordered it’s dissolution in the country.

A Russian court had on Wednesday sentenced a Danish Jehovah’s witness Dennis Christensen to six years in prison for extremism.

Christensen became the first adherent of the christian evangelical movement to be sent to prison in Russia.

The sentencing of Christensen has provoked a public outcry with rights groups comparing Moscow to the persecution of believers during the soviet era.
