Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding in Ado-Ekiti, Two Reportedly Dead

Residents of Ado-Ekiti, have protested the worsening flooding in parts of the city following hours of heavy and continuous rainfall.

The flooding, which affected several communities and major roads, left residents of Afao Road, Adehun, Adebayo, Ìyànà Emirin and Falegan stranded, with many unable to access their homes as floodwater submerged roads and residential areas.

One of the major points of concern is the Elemi-Afao Road, where a bridge has reportedly collapsed completely, making movements difficult for residents and motorists.

The residents attributed the flooding to blocked waterways, inadequate drainage systems and poor channelisation of waterways.

They appealed to the state government to urgently clear blocked waterways and undertake proper channelisation and drainage works to prevent a recurrence of the situation during heavy rainfall.

The Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, who addressed the protesters, assured them that the state government would immediately swing into action to address the flooding and alleviate the hardship being experienced by residents.

Olatunbosun said the government would assess the affected areas and take necessary measures to restore access, while addressing the drainage and flooding challenges.

Several parts of Ado-Ekiti have been affected by the flooding following the heavy rainfall, leaving residents and motorists stranded in some areas.

Two persons have reportedly been confirmed dead as a result of the flooding, while there are also unconfirmed reports that two other persons are still missing.
