Disaster Averted as Ethanol-Laden Truck Falls on Lagos Bridge

A major disaster has been averted in Lagos State after a truck conveying 33,000 litres of ethanol fell at the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin area.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, says no casualty was recorded in the incident, which preliminary investigations linked to speeding.

The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, says emergency responders cordoned off the area, while fire service personnel applied chemical foam to prevent a possible fire outbreak or explosion due to the highly flammable nature of ethanol. Police and traffic officials also assisted in securing the scene and controlling traffic.

In a separate incident, a Dangote cement truck that climbed a road divider and became stuck at Oke Koto, Agege, has been removed, restoring traffic movement. LASEMA attributed the incident to reckless driving and confirmed that no death or injury was recorded.

The agency has urged motorists to observe speed limits and traffic regulations, especially when transporting hazardous materials. Residents are also advised to report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 767 and 112.
