Ekiti Police Officers Face Discipline Over Viral Biker Confrontation
Police officers attached to the Ekiti State Command who were captured in a viral video confronting a motorcyclist are undergoing disciplinary proceedings at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The Police Complaint Response Unit disclosed this in an update on X on Tuesday, stating that the action followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
The development follows a complaint lodged on October 6 by representatives of the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti chapter, over alleged extortion and intimidation of one of its members.
According to the state command, the motorcyclist was reportedly intercepted by a police patrol team while travelling from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti.
The officers were subsequently identified and taken into custody for questioning over allegations of extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
The viral video reportedly shows a disagreement between the rider and a police officer during a roadworthiness check, with allegations that the officer demanded ₦20,000.
The police have condemned extortion and abuse of authority, insisting that no officer is authorised to demand money from members of the public while performing legitimate duties. The outcome of the disciplinary proceedings and any sanctions against the officers have yet to be announced.
