Venezuela president proposes fresh election for opposition-run congress
Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has proposed fresh elections for the country’s opposition-held national assembly.
The assembly which was dissolved in 2017 has continued to convene for legislative activities since then.
President Maduro believes a peaceful, and constitutional election would legitimize the legislative arm of government.
However, he did not set a specific date for the vote which was originally slated for late 2020 before its dissolution in 2017.
The opposition won majority in Venezuela’s national assembly in 2015, but was stripped of its powers in 2017 for searing in three legislators whose election were ruled invalid by the court.
