UPDATED: Gunmen kidnap scores of female students in Zamfara state
Gunmen have kidnapped some students of government secondary school, Jangebe, Zamfara state.
The school which is located within the Talata-Mafara local government area of the state came under siege at past midnight.
The state commissioner for information, Mr Suleiman Tunau Anka said the gunmen stormed the school around 1am today and abducted the students.
He did not confirm how many students were kidnapped.
However, reports suggest that no fewer than 300 girls were abducted from their dormitory.
Spokesperson of the state police command, Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the incident.
Shehu said a police team has been deployed to the school where the incident happened.
Meanwhile, the Zamfara state police command has confirmed the number of students abducted from the government girls science secondary school Jangebe in Jangebe.
The state police commissioner, Abutu Yaro said three-hundred and seventeen students were abducted from the school.
Yaro said a joint search and rescue operation is already underway to rescue the 317 students kidnapped by the marauders.
The commissioner appealed to everyone to be calm as joint efforts of the police and other security agencies will surely lead to a successful rescue of the students.
