UN calls for calm as protesters defy military curfew in Sudan

Large crowds remained on the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum through the night, ignoring a curfew declared by the military.

On Thursday, president Omar Al-Bashir was overthrown and arrested after months of street protests.

But demonstrators say the military council which has taken power is part of the same regime.

The fresh stand-off has raised fears of a violent confrontation between protesters and the army.

There is also a real danger that different elements of the security forces and militia could turn their guns on each other.

However, the United Nations and the African Union have called for calm.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant general Omar Zaria Al-Abidin from governing military council has continued address citizens.

Al-abidin maintained that the transitional period is fixed as a maximum.

He urged the people to sit together and engage in dialogue on the formation of the government.

Al-abidin assured that the military will support and protect the people’s demands.
