Ten Ekiti Governorship Candidates Sign Peace Accord
Ten out of sixteen candidates contesting the June 18 Governorship election in Ekiti State have signed a peace accord.
The peace accord signing ceremony held in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State Capital.
The candidates who signed the peace accord were Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of the APC, Segun Oni of the SDP, Wole Oluyede of the ADC and Kemi Elebute Halle of the ADP.
Others were, Adeyinka Alli of the DPP, Ajagunigbala Moses of the AAC, Agboola Olaniyi of PRP Among others.
The peace accord signing was facilitated by the National Peace Committee, led by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah.
Kukah while addressing the stakeholders and political parties present noted that singing peace accord was a way of reaffirming that the candidate contesting, security personnel and other relevant stakeholders must conduct themselves in a professional & peaceful manner ahead of the Governorship election in the State.
On his part, the National Chairman, of the Independent Electoral Commission Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu noted that without peace, the deployment plans, new innovations in result management, safety of personnel, security of materials would not be guarantee.
He added that the credibility of elections will be undermined.
The Chairman Ekiti State council of Traditional rulers, Oba Gabriel Adejuwon, who is also the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti appealed to the Governorship Candidates to plead with their followers to embrace peace in the interest of the State, adding that no blood any citizens worth being shed on election matters.
The peace accord signing put together by the National Peace Committee was watershed to political violence rocking the State ahead of the Saturday’s Governorship election that all political parties must embrace peace before, during and after the poll.
