The party leader, Mr Tundu Lissu said the office was destroyed on the eve of his visit to the town on Friday.

He described the act as terror and intimidation.

However, the politician said his planned visit would still go on despite the attack.

Mr Lissu returned to Tanzania last month after surviving an assassination attempt in 2017 that saw him seek treatment in Kenya and Belgium.

He has been nominated by his party to run for the presidency in October’s general elections, but has said he lacks confidence in the electoral commission.

The country’s meteorological authority said no changes are expected in the ocean currents following a 6.0 magnitude offshore earthquake on Wednesday night.

The earthquake hit near the commercial city of Dar Es Salaam.

Local media reported that people feared a tsunami would hit the coast.

The Tanzanian meteorological authority also said no weather changes are expected after the earthquake
