Taiwan gay marriage: Parliament legalizes same-sex marriage
Taiwan’s parliament has legalized same-sex marriage in the country.
The country is the first to legalize such marriage in Asia, following a vote today which was welcomed with jubilations.
Lawmakers debated three different bills to legalize same-sex unions, the government’s bill, the most progressive of the three was passed.
Report says, the two other bills submitted by conservative lawmakers, refers to partnership as same-sex family relationships, or same-sex unions rather than marriages.
In 2017, Taiwan’s constitutional court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry, a move which brought up series of referendum.
In the meantime, Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen has described the move a big step towards true equality.
