Supreme court sacks Bayelsa state governor-elect

The Supreme Court has sacked the governor-elect of Bayelsa state, David Lyon and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo.

The judgment followed an appeal that was filed by PDP its governorship and deputy governorship candidates in Bayelsa state, Douye Diri and Lawrence Ewhruojakpo.

In a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of justices led by justice Mary Odili, the apex court held that Degi-Eremieoyo presented a forged certificate to INEC.

Delivering the lead judgment justice Ejembi Eko reinstated the November 12, 2019, judgment of the federal high court in Abuja that disqualified Degi-Eremieoyo from participating in the governorship poll.

Consequently, it ordered INEC to immediately withdraw the certificate of return that was issued to them and issue a fresh one to the party that secured the second highest number of votes and got the required constitutional spread.

Meanwhile, flags of the Peoples’ Democratic Party have earlier seen to have been removed from a roundabout leading to the main gate of the Bayelsa state government house at Onopa, Yenagoa.

The roundabout was seen to have been decorated with the flags of APC ahead of formal takeover of the state’s governance by the APC.
