Protest greets Bamire’s appointment as new VC of OAU

Protest has greeted the appointment of Prof. Adebayo Bamire as the new Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

The protesters who are ile Ife indigenes want one of them to assume the position

Pro Bamire who is the institution’s current Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic is a native of Oyan in Odo-otin local government area of Osun State.

His appointment will take effect from June 7, 2022 when the term outgoing vice chancellor, Prof Eyitope Ogunmodede winds up.

Shortly after the announcement by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University, Owelle Oscar Udoji on Thursday, some Ife indigenes blocked the main gate of the university in protest, preventing movement of vehicles and persons for almost an hour.

As promised they returned to the school today in protest as all the gates leading to the OAU campus were shut again.

While speaking to newsmen some of the protesters victoria Akantioke and Akinleye Okiji said since the establishment of the university 61years ago an Ife indigene has never been appointment as a substantive Vice Chancellor.

Akantioke and Okiji said they will continue to block all entrance to the university until the authorities accedd to their demand.
