OAU Commends FG for Banning Mining Activities on Institution’s environs

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in Osun state has described federal government’s intervention banning all mining activities on the institution’s land as commendable and timely.

The directive banning the mining activities in the University was pronounced by the minister of solid minerals development, Dele Alake on Tuesday pending the conclusion of the investigation of illegal mining around the university community

Adaba FM Correspondent Tolulope Faleye who visited mined sites in the University confirmed that ecological damage has been caused to different parts of the land by the activities of the miners.

The miners were absent as at the time of visiting the sites which indicates compliance with the minister’s directive.

However, the institution’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, urged security officers to assist in ensuring that the compliance is sustained to prevent environmental pollution and criminality at the expense of students’ health and welfare.

Olarenwaju also condemned all forms of encroachment and land grabbing at
different parts of the Institution’s land.

He urged the public to desist from occupying any part of the University’s land which is being mapped out with a perimeter fence.
