NIS to investigate bribery allegation at borders
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it will investigate the allegation of bribery against its personnel along the nation’s borders.
In a statement on Friday, public relations officer of NIS, Sunday James, in Abuja denies the allegations that its personnel are involved in bribe-taking at the borders.
The reaction follows an online media alleging that “with just 200 naira bribe per immigration checkpoint, illegal migrants were infiltrating Nigeria through Sokoto.
The report also alleged that NIS officials at patrol check points on various Nigerian highways have indirectly ‘legalized’ illegal migration with their cash-for-pass attitudes.
James says that the comptroller general of immigration, Muhammad Babandede, had given the assurance that the alleged acts would be investigated.
He notes that the service would never allow its image to be destroyed by some unscrupulous elements painting the service bad.
