Need For Peace To Reign in Edo As Residents Prepare for September 19 Guber Polls

Elections are by their very nature, the stage play for political scripts.

This is because of the level of interest it generates among both the elites and the ordinary citizens, who are both stakeholders.

It therefore behoves on all to tailor their actions appropriately, as any misstep may set in motion a failed democratic process .

The past week has ushered in a supercharged political atmosphere in Edo state.

A week of siege laying, unroofing of Assembly complex, as well as subtle and not so subtle threats.

Appropriately, concerned organisations and citizens have lent their voices to the call for a conducive atmosphere for a peaceful election to hold.

Interestingly, INEC spoke of the need to rub minds with political gladiators ahead of the guber polls in both Edo and Ondo states.

It would seem that Inec has not achieved much success in this regard.

The Edo election holds in a little over one month from now.

More than anything, key players must begin to do more than throw tantrums or banters in the media.

Campaigns must in earnest begin to reflect the desires of the masses, and without saying, the solutions to the series of problems bedevilling the state.

The road to a successful election, begins before the polls are opened.

Today’s news commentary views the political cross breeding between ize iyamu and Godwin obazeki as the underlining fireworks that have metamophosized to the ugly political outburst.

In 2016, obazeki was the apc’s angel and ize iyamu, an unmarketable candidate, but the twist came in 2020 when obazeki now becomes a stray lamb and ize iyamu becomes the messiah.

The results of these political calculations and permutations will be determined by the inec and voters will be the instruments.

The piece urges former governor Adams Oshiomole to tread softly as the tales in Edo politics would now teach him to stop being “Mr say it all”.

Oshiomole’s submissions when he backed Obazeki against Ize Iyamu in 2016 have partly landed Ize Iyamu in trouble which had made him embark on necessary damage control strategies.

September the 19th is almost here and Nigerians are keeping their fingers crossed to know what will be the outcome.
