INEC wants media to study new electoral act ahead Osun Guber election
The Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) wants media practitioners in Osun state to study the new electoral act ahead of the July 16th gubernatorial election in the state
This according to the INEC national commissioner and chairman information and voter education committee Festus Okoye will enable them perform their electioneering roles professionally and efficiently.
Okoye stated this at a workshop organised for journalists in the State on the new innovation in the conduct of elections and the legal issues in the new electoral act held in Osogbo the state capital.
The INEC national commissioner hinted that the new electoral law will be the commission’s guiding principle in the conduct of the Osun state election, urging journalists to be fair and objective in their news reportage.
While enlightening participants on Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System, (BIVAS)and it’s usage the INEC Head of Department on ICT/VR, Olufunke Toki hinted that BIVAS would prevent sharp practices during election as it must first recognize both the face and fingerprint of every voter before voter will be allowed to vote.
In his remarks the state chairman of Nigeria Union of journalists noted that the workshop would go a long way in enabling journalists in the state to get familiar with the rudiments of electioneering process and coverage In line with the new electoral law.
Some of the topics discussed during the workshop were technological innovations by INEC with emphasis on BVAS and it’s usage, the electoral acts. 2022 and the elections among others.
