INEC fixes Ekiti East bye-election for March 20

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed March the 20th, 2021 for bye-election into the vacant seat of Ekiti east constituency-1, state assembly.

The commission in a press statement issued by the national commissioner & chairman information and voter education committee, Festus Okoye explained that official notification for the election will be published today, February, the 24th, 2021.

The statement further explained that the last day for submission of list of the nominated candidates will be ended at 6:00pm on the 8th march, 2021.

The commission urged all political parties intending to field candidates to pay close attention to the timetable and schedule of activities to conduct transparent and valid party primaries.

INEC added that a political party that presents the name of a candidate who does not meet the qualifications stipulated in the constitution and the electoral act shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable to a maximum fine of 500,000 naira.

The seat for the assembly became vacant following the death of hon. Oluwajuwa Adegbuyi, who died on 1st of February, 2021 and the subsequent declaration of vacancy for the constituency by the speaker of the house, Funminiyi Afuye.
