Governor Obiano suspends more traditional rulers in Anambra

Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano has suspended 12 more traditional rulers in the state for one year each.

The suspension came few weeks after Obiano suspended Igwe Peter Uyanwa, ruler of Ukwulu community of Dunukofia council area of the state.

Uyanwa is also chairman of Anambra Central Traditional Rulers Council.

A statement by the commissioner for local government, chieftaincy and community affairs Greg Obi says the monarchs were suspended for travelling out of the state, without consultation or approval from the government.

Obiano suspended the traditional rulers for visiting President Muhammadu Buhari last week.

Meanwhile one of the 12 traditional rulers has described the government’s action as unfortunate.

The monarch who pleaded not to be identified for security reasons said, Governor Willie Obiano, was ill-advised on the matter.

He said the governor had no powers in any extant law to suspend them in office for just trying to meet the president of the country

The monarch noted that it is unfortunate and laughable that the governor had to carry out what he called despotic action in a democratic dispensation.
