Ekiti workers join NLC nationwide strike

Workers in Ekiti State have joined their counterparts across the country in the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress and other affiliate bodies to press home the demand for a better welfare package for Nigerians after the removal of the fuel subsidy by the federal government.

Adaba FM visited the state secretariat and governor’s office in Ado and other government agencies and observed a low turnout of workers, particularly junior workers, in the state.

In a phone interview with the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Ekiti State, Mr. Sola Adigun, said that the industrial action became necessary because of the feat-dragging tactics of the Federal government in implementing some of the promises made to the workers after the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He noted that state governors have failed to implement the agreement with labor unions in their various states, hence the need for the nationwide strike.

Adigun expressed that the labor unions at the national level did not receive any court injunction stopping the commencement of the industrial action.

Some of the workers who spoke under anonymity said that the strike was not in the interest of Nigerian workers but was politically motivated and a personal vendetta.

They opined that the leadership of the labor unions had aligned with a major political party in the country, making it difficult for them to believe in the fight.

Efforts to speak with the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Ekiti State, Mr. Kolapo Olusola, proved abortive.
