Ekiti judicial panel calls for memoranda from victims abused by SARS
The Ekiti state judicial panel of enquiry set up on the excesses of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has called for memoranda from victims of various abuses by the squad and others persons before and during the nationwide protests.
The State Attorney General & Commissioner for justice, Olawale Fapohunda gave the information while presenting update on the Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Allegations of Human Rights Violations against Police officers including men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other Persons in Ado Ekiti.
Fapohunda noted that the move became imperative following the enormous public interest that has been shown in the workings of the State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Allegations of Human Rights Violations against Police Officers.
He explained that the Judicial Panel is expected to evaluate evidences presented and other surrounding circumstances, draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaints and recommend compensation and other remedial measures, where appropriate.
He expressed the hope that the sittings of the Judicial panel will give youths an opportunity to speak openly about their experiences to enable the state government have a better understanding of the depth of the problem and find a sustainable solution.
