Ekiti Bans Smoking in Public, Private Gatherings

The Ekiti State Government has officially ban tobacco smoking in both public and private gatherings across all 16 local government areas of the state.

The announcement was made in Ado-Ekiti during the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2025, in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

Dr. Filani Oyebanji, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, stated that the ban is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding public health and curbing tobacco-related illnesses.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, Dr. Oyebanji noted that tobacco use fuels various health issues and social challenges, reinforcing the need for stronger policies, public education, and smoking cessation support.

Oluwafemi Akinbode, a representative of CAPPA, commended the initiative as evidence of Ekiti’s political commitment to public health and its alignment with international standards.

He highlighted the importance of the ‘Smoke-Free Ekiti Project’ in protecting non-smokers from secondhand smoke, reshaping public attitudes toward smoking, and reducing future healthcare costs.

Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government, Bosun Osaloni, and the Chairman of Okada Riders Association in Ekiti, Kunle Asaolu, expressed support for the move.

They pledged to back enforcement efforts, including the implementation of penalties for those who violate the smoking ban.
