Ekiti Assembly Rejects Afe Babalola Day Bill
Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have dismissed a bill proposing the establishment of “Afe Babalola Day” to honor the founder of ABUAD University, Aare Afe Babalola.
The bill, co-sponsored by Ado constituencies one and two representatives, Ayodeji Adegbite and Rt Hon. Bolaji Olagbaju, was met with opposition during deliberations.
Olagbaju and Adegbite argued for the recognition of Aare Afe Babalola’s contributions to Ekiti State’s development, proposing a public holiday in his honor.
However, former Deputy Speaker Akeem Jamiu and other members, including Tunde Ìdòwú, Babatunde Ọkẹ̀, Bode Adeoye, Teju Okuyiga, Iyabo Fakunle-Okieme, and Tope Longe, opposed the bill.
They contended that creating a dedicated day for Afe Babalola was unnecessary, citing the existing “oni uyi” award by the state government as sufficient recognition.
They proposed establishing a hall of fame to honor various individuals who have contributed to the state’s development.
