DR Congo end Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup dream

Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on Sunday as DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Rabat.

Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria a perfect start with a third-minute opener, but Meschak Elia equalised for DR Congo in the 32nd minute.

Both sides had chances to win it in extra time, but neither could find a breakthrough, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout.

DR Congo held their nerve, winning 4–3 on penalties to advance to the intercontinental playoff and end Nigeria’s campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

DR Congo will now prepare for the playoff round as they continue their push for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
