Breaking News (Detailed): ASUU begins indefinite strike nationwide

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has commenced an indefinite strike nationwide.

The university lecturers made the announcement after a meeting this morning in Abuja.

The union is demanding the implementation of the outstanding 2009 agreement and memorandum of understanding of 2013 signed with the federal government.

Some of the demands of the union are payment of fractions and non-payment of salaries, non-release of academic allowances, non-implementation of the provision of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries.

Also the removal of university staff school from funding by the federal government, funds for the revitalization of public universities, co-funding of existing state universities and proliferation of universities by their visitors.

The union president, Biodun Ogunyemi explained that the union has exhausted all avenues to get the government to fully implement their demands.
