Belgium apologises to dr Congo over abuse of power
Belgium’s King Philippe has expressed his deepest regrets to the Democratic Republic of Congo for his country’s colonial abuses.
He made the remarks in a letter to Democratic Republic of Congo’s president FĂ©lix Tshisekedi on the country’s 60th anniversary of independence from Belgium.
King Philippe is the first Belgian monarch to formally express remorse for atrocities committed in the colonial era .
Three weeks ago, a statue of Leopold, the second was set on fire by anti-racism protesters.
More than 10 million Africans were thought to have died during his reign.
