Senator Lawan emerged winner after a voting session by 107 senators-elect present at the inauguration.
Senator Lawan polled 79 votes to defeat his only rival senator Ali Ndume who garnered 28 votes
Senator Lawan represents Yobe North in the national assembly and he was the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
