300 people died in new fever outbreak
The worst ever outbreak of Dengue fever has killed nearly hundred people in Sri Lanka, with aid agencies warning against further spread of the mosquito-ban viral disease.
The ministry of health said the number of dengue infections has climbed above one hundred thousand since the beginning of this year, with two hundred ninety-six deaths.
Health officials blamed the current crisis on recent monsoon rains and floods that have left pools of stagnant water and rotting rain-soaked trash, ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes that carry the virus which causes flu-like symptoms.
According to the world health organisation, which, early detection and treatment, could save lives when infections are severe, particularly for young children.
