Set up vetting measures, Trump tells department of homeland security

United States president Donald Trump has ordered the department of homeland security to set up vetting measures, after a deadly truck attack in New York.

Eight people were killed and 11 injured when the driver of the truck hit people on a cycle path in lower Manhattan.

The suspect identified as Sayfullo Saipov from Uzbekistan was shot and injured by police as he left his car.

Officials have linked the incident to a terror attack.

President Donald Trump twitted his condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the terror attack.

Meanwhile, New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio described the incident as a cowardly act, aimed at innocent civilians.

The incident is the deadliest in the city since the September 11 attacks.

In the meantime, defiant New Yorkers celebrated a traditional Halloween parade hours after the attack.

Families celebrated surrounded by police officers armed with long guns while dozens of local and federal law enforcement officers were still investigating the attack.
