Politicians Protest in Ekiti over Unpaid Allowances
Former political office holders in Ekiti state trooped out to the major streets of Ado Ekiti to protest the state governor Ayo Fayose’s refusal to pay their severance and furniture allowances.
The politicians are former chairmen, councillors and supervisory councillors who served between 2008 and 2011.
The protest began from Dalimore junction through Okeyinmi and ended at the governor’s office in Ado Ekiti where they made their grievances known.
The leader of the protesters Babalola Adekunle said that they took the decision after their prolonged communications with the state government on the matter yielded no result.
The protesters called on the governor to obey the supreme ruling of September 2016 which ordered him to settle the severance and furniture allowances of former political office holders.
special assistant to the governor on public communication and new media Lere Olayinka in a telephone interview said payment of severance and allowances to past local government political office holders was not in the purview of the state government.
