Marikana Massacre: South Africa marks fifth anniversary
South Africa has marked the fifth anniversary of the Marikana massacre in which thirty-four miners were shot dead by police.
The striking miners who worked for the mining company, Lonmin, were demanding that their monthly salaries be nearly tripled to 12,500 rands.
The association of mine workers and construction union organised the event which was held on the hillside where the massacre occurred.
The killing of the miners is believed to be the most lethal use of force by South Africa police, since the dawn of democracy.
