Importance or Reason for Population Census
The importance or reasons for conducting a census include:
Population size i.e the structure of d population, Revenue estimations, Forecasts future economic needs Determine the level of unemployment, Determine the standard of living. E.g Population and housing census, Formulation of economic policies, Distribution of resources, Provision of social amenities, Investment decision i.e it’s attract international investors, Number of immigrants can be known, Given of aids from international agencies, Determination of population density. I.e population per land area, Sharing of political power, Allocation of Parliamentary seats, Ward N constituency delineation, Planing for the young and old population, Other plannings e.g education, health, housing, roads, etc.
We have Defacto and Dejure population census.
The two shall be adopted but enumeration is going to be on defacto method.
Defacto method-: This is the type of population census which involves the counting of only people who are physically present. Or seen during census period. THIS IS THE METHOD THAT WILL BE ADOPTED IN 2023 CENSUS IN NIGERIA.
The Federal government confirmed that this year’s National Population and Housing Census will start on May 3.
A member of the Publicity and Advocacy Committee on the 2023 National Population and Housing Census, Dr Garba Abari, made the confirmation at a forum in Abuja, on Sunday.
Abari explained that the three-day exercise would start on May 3 and end on May 5 across the 36 States in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
