Gunmen kill 3 police officers, 3 others in Sokoto

Sokoto state police command has confirmed the attack on Yarbulutu village market in Sabon Birni Local government area by some gunmen suspected to be bandits.

State Police public relations officer, DSP Sanusi Abubakar confirmed the attack.

The attack which happened around 2:30pm on Monday led to the killing of 3 policemen and 3 other traders.

Reports have it that the gunmen who came on bikes opened fire on innocent traders in the weekly market making people to flee, scampering for their lives

It was also gathered that the policemen at a nearby checkpoint rushed to the scene and engaged the gunmen which resulted in the killing of three policemen and setting ablaze of two operational vehicles.

This happened when President Muhammadu Buhari and minister of defence, Salihi Magashi were in the state attending the 2022 COAS annual conference.

A resident of the village who witnessed the incident expressed concern with the way gunmen terrorize the area on a daily bases without much resistance.

He said Sabon Birni and Isa local government areas in the eastern part of Sokoto have for long been held to ransom by bandits and kidnappers operating in Zamfara and part of Sokoto state.

Recall that last week, gunmen attacked and killed six people in another village of Goronyo local government area of the state.

A similar episode also took place early last year where suspected gunmen killed more than 40 people.
