Electoral Commission in Congo Plans to Shift Presidential Election
President of the electoral commission in the Democratic Republic of Congo says a presidential election will probably not be possible this year.
In a chat with newsmen, Corneille Nangaa argues that the parameters at the commission’s disposal mean they may not meet the year-end deadline for a presidential election.
The refusal of Democratic Republic of Congo’s President, Joseph Kabik to step down at the end of his second elected term in December last year sparked protests that killed dozens of people.
Hence, a deal was struck between Kabila’s representatives and opposition leaders to organize an election before the end of the year and also barred him from trying to change the constitution to stand for a third term.
However, Kabila has said that only the electoral commission can schedule the vote once he finishes enrolling millions of votes.
