Ekiti tertiary institutions issue 24hour ultimatum to govt over unpaid subvention
Four Tertiary Institutions in Ekiti State under the aegis of the joint action committee of Subventing Institutions have issued a 24hours ultimatum to the State Government to release their five months subvention or be ready to face an unprecedented industrial action.
The four institutions include; Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, science and technology, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti and Ekiti State College of Health, Science and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti.
Workers of the institutions Staged a peaceful Protest at the early of hours of this morning to demand the payment of their five months subvention amounting to over 3 billion naira from the state Government.
Chairman Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Ekiti state University chapter, Kayode Arogundade who spoke on behalf of the institutions, told newsmen that the present administration in the state at it’s twilight laid off several staff of the subventing institutions unceremoniously.
He condemned what he termed the State Government’s unending deceit on monthly statutory allocation to the State, absolute abandonment of subventing institutions in the state on the altar of political mediocrity and constant delay in release of subvention as well as failure to yield to various peaceful persuasions.
When contacted the state commissioner for information, Akin Omole said the leaders of the protesters are meeting with the Governor, adding that he would be able to come out with a robust reaction after their meeting with the Governor.
On his part, the Special Assistant to the Governor on tertiary institutions, Dr. Sikiru Eniola explained that the State government has never abdicated its responsibilities and has chosen dialogues to carry along all categories of workers and pensioners.
He added that the state government is not owing any worker or subventing institutions any salary or subvention, but agreed that the arrears of subventions and salaries owed by the previous Administration will be paid.
