Ekiti rejigs building approval processes to stem collapse
The Ekiti State government has announced that it will no longer permit the construction of buildings outside the approved plan within the state.
During an on-the-spot assessment of a collapsed event centre in Ijero Ekiti, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Oladapo Karounwi, stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the building was constructed outside the government-approved plan for the developer.
He said that the incident would reinforces government’s commitment to ensuring that proper planning regulations are adhered to, and that public safety remains a top priority.
He stated that the government would take a proactive approach in implementing the state’s town planning law of 2011.
He also ensured that the government would provide support to local government town planners to ensure that buildings are constructed properly across the state.
The building was reported to have collapsed on Saturday afternoon while a reception ceremony was taking place.
