Subsidy removal: Ekiti govt rolls out palliatives for workers

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has provided palliatives for private and public sector workers in the state to alleviate the effects of subsidy removal.

This decision was reached after the governor constituted a committee consisting of labour union leaders and government representatives to find a solution that would bring relief to the people of the state amidst economic hardship.

Speaking to journalists about the agreed-upon measures with the labour leaders, the state’s finance commissioner, Akíntúndé Oyebode, revealed that the state government has agreed to begin the payment of 2017 and 2021 leave bonuses to workers in the state.

He added that the state government would also effect the 2020 and 2021 promotions of workers with financial backing and would also pay one month of pension arrears to both local government and state pensioners.

On the private sector the commissioner said that the state would commence payment of 5000 cash transfer from August to December 2023 to ten thousand Ekiti households with the focus on the elders.

Oyebanji said that state government would roll out free buses to ease the pains of workers and people of state.

Labour leaders in the present at the briefing including the NLC chairman Kolapo Olatunde and his TUC counterpart Sola Adigun thanked the state government for looking into their demands particularly at the time of this hardship orchestrated by the policy.

The duo however shown their support to the removal of the fuel subsidy by the federal government.
